Frequently Asked Questions About Maple High School

Is there homework at Maple High School?

Yes. However, homework is not required, but it is highly recommended. Homework allows students the opportunity to earn more credits in their courses.  It’s simple, the more work a student completes, the more credits he/she earns toward graduation.  Since Math and Language Arts tend to be the biggest hurdles for our students, we highly recommend our students do homework in these subjects.

Are students able to earn grades at Maple High School, or are all classes graded as pass or fail?

Students are able to earn grades of A,B, or C at Maple High School.  Work that does not meet the standards as outlined by the state of California is not accepted for credit.

Is it possible for my student to “catch up” on credits?

Yes, it is possible.  Unlike the traditional high schools in the district, Maple awards credits every 6-7 weeks.  Students need not take a particular class for an entire semester in order to earn 5 credits (the standard amount of credit for a semester course).  By doing extra homework, it is possible for students to meet state requirements for a course in a shorter amount of time, and thus earn credit faster.

Can a student eventually return Lompoc or Cabrillo High School?

Yes.  All students attending Maple High School as a result of a voluntary transfer who are under the age of 18 have the right to return to either Lompoc or Cabrillo High School at the beginning of the following school year.  The counseling office at either high school should be contacted in spring if students are planning to return the following school year.

What can my student do to make more credits toward graduation?

Besides doing extra homework, students may also take classes at L.U.S.D.’s Adult Education and Allan Hancock College while attending Maple High School in order to earn additional credit.

How can I check on my student’s progress?

Students at Maple High School carry a “check sheet” with them all day.  The check sheet shows daily updates of progress toward completing credits.  It also shows teacher comments, and attendance.  The easiest way to check your student’s progress is to have them bring home a copy of their check sheet.

Parents and guardians can also call the school and talk to their student’s homeroom teacher, or email them (check the Staff section for email addresses).

Is a Maple diploma the same as Lompoc and Cabrillo High Schools’ diplomas?

Yes.  Maple High School is a W.A.S.C. accredited school and as such, our diploma is the same.  However, students planning to attend a university such as Cal Poly or UCSB (as opposed to a community college) straight out of high school should take extra care to ensure the A-G requirements are met.
